ABOUT US
We believe that an Engineering education should not be purely economic driven. bGood exists as an initiative in the Department of Biomedical Engineering in the National University of Singapore (NUS) to bridge our education with community impact through a community-based learning approach that also enhances the learning and engagement of our learners.
NUS Biomedical Engineering for Good (bGood) is our "Company of Good" where our aspiring Biomedical Engineers work with community partners and disadvantaged individuals to co-design and solve real-world challenges faced by them through design and technological solutions as part of their undergraduate course in NUS.
OUR APPROACH
Our curriculum lays the technical foundations for our first- and second-year undergraduates where they can then apply their knowledge, expertise and skills to solve real-world community problems through two courses on Gerontechnology in Ageing and Assistive Technologies for Persons with Disability in their third and final years.
Our aspiring Biomedical Engineers can also work with our community partners on projects as part of their Independent Study course, Undergraduate Research Opportunity Programme (UROP), Undergraduate Research Experience (UREx), Design-Your-Own-Course (DYOC), Innovation & Design Programme (iDP) project or Final Year Project (FYP).
Completion of these courses and projects could count towards the Community Healthcare & Technology specialisation in our Biomedical Engineering undergraduate programme.
GERONTECHNOLOGY IN AGEING
The course BN4102 Gerontechnology in Ageing introduces aspiring Biomedical Engineers to various healthcare technologies that alleviate the burden associated with ageing, with a focus on designing and developing appropriate technological innovations for the silver economy. The course covers the topics on the biology of ageing, technologies in assisted living, caregiving, and compensating declining physical abilities, as well as digital health in ageing. This course includes a community-based learning project where students partner with various social service agencies to identify and address existing gaps through a hands-on design project to develop a gerontechnological prototype.

SPECIAL THEME: EXERGAMING
In 2023, we did a special theme on exergaming in BN4102 where the teams in the course were tasked to design and develop an exergaming prototype to encourage physical exercise in older adults to promote healthy living. ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY FOR PERSONS WITH DISABILITY
This course BN4103 Assistive Technology for Persons with Disability introduces aspiring Biomedical Engineers to various assistive technologies that allows persons with disabilities to enjoy a more independent life, with a focus on designing and developing appropriate assistive technologies. The course covers topics on disability communication and etiquette, principles of successful assistive technology design, and the various types of assistive technologies and software for persons with disabilities. This course also includes a community-based learning project where students partner with disability service providers or a person with a disability to identify and address challenges through developing a device, app, or other solutions that helps them live more independently.
